France

The French EA was created in 1847. It has taken on different forms over the years. First of all it was an Alliance of individual members, but since the 1950s it also accepts parachurch organisations, local churches and denominations. France has over 60 million inhabitants. Half of them still claim to have some links with the Catholic Church, and only half of this half says that they believe in God. The overall trend is not so much Catholic but extremely secular, (strict separation of church and State) and materialistic. There are about 1 200 000 Protestants of all tendencies. Although the numbers are very small, unfortunately they are represented by 3 main organisations, the French Protestant Federation, the French Evangelical Federation and the French Evangelical Alliance.
