The Pancyprian Union of Evangelical Churches is an association of churches founded in 1994 to build unity and cooperation among evangelicals. The Alliance is growing and reflecting the multiethnic
nature of the recent growth of the evangelical community in Cyprus.
There is a significant harvest from among the expatriate students and
workers who are coming to Christ while in Cyprus, some of whom upon
return to their home countries have become involved in church-planting.
We are involved not only in bringing together local churches across theological and
ethnic boundaries but also in bringing believers together to serve the increasing
number of people in society with basic physical needs.
Cyprus is still a divided country, with the two main communities being geographically
separated after the 1974 invasion and occupation by Turkey, a fact that is still
a source of pain for most of the population. Pray for reconciliation
between the Greek and Turkish communities, for a permanent political settlement for
our land, but even more, for an awakening and a hunger for God among Cypriots who
are becoming increasingly self-centred and materialistic and less and less family
and God-centred. We pray that the church will grow in holiness so that her light
will shine brightly in the darkness.
A cooperative inner city ministry by 7 churches to provide for basic physical needs
of the underprivileged is at the first stage of its life. We need leadership and
direction and for the place that has been found to be fitted out appropriately.
The Alliance needs wisdom to deal with its multicultural makeup. How do we go
forward together when ethnic, cultural and language differences, apart from the
theological ones, present a significant challenge.
